Surviving And Moving Forward: The SAMFund for Young Adult Survivors of Cancer is designed to support young adults as they get back on their feet after treatment.

Cancer is an expensive disease. Young adults, in general, are facing more challenges than ever given the current economic crisis, competitive job market and increasing costs of living. Put the two together, and young adults with a history of cancer are at a significant disadvantage when it comes to living independently and moving forward after treatment.

The SAMFund proudly provides financial and other support to young adult cancer survivors as they strive to reach their goals. Through its unique financial assistance program, a total of $600,000 in grants and scholarships has been awarded since 2005, covering a wide range of needs including (but not limited to) rent, medical bills, insurance premiums, family-building expenses, gym memberships, tuition and loans, and much more.

The SAMFund also hosts Survivors' Network events in cities throughout the country. These social groups are coordinated by SAMFund grant recipients and give young adults, caregivers, friends and significant others a chance to connect with one another.

In early 2011, The SAMFund launched the first of its new free Webinar series, targeting issues specific to the young adult survivor community such as negotiating down medical debt, learning to budget and finding resources for financial assistance. Moderated by The SAMFund and presented by financial professionals, these webinars provide information, advice and resources to help participants improve their financial situations post-treatment.

Ultimately, it is the goal of The SAMFund to help young adults regain their financial independence and reclaim control over their physical, mental and emotional health and continued wellness – so they can not only survive, but truly move forward.
